Toyota has been present in India for decades now and for all this time it has maintained a very discreet profile here with strictly denying the possibility of a diesel or the possibility of a hatch. Basically denying itself the possibility of mass sales in India.

Then came the recession and with the rest of the auto world Toyota for the first time perhaps noticed the pocket of the middle-class Indian. Hence came the announcement of the diesel Corolla and thus climbed the Toyota sales charts.

Intrigued by the this stunt here, Toyota for the first time entered the entry level sedan market with the Etios with sales which redefined the sales charts at Toyota India. And then very recently, riding high on success Toyota announced its first ever hatch on the same Etios platform, the Toyota Etios Liva. And sales have been record breaking at Toyota here.

This was all the good part of the story, now comes the not-so-good one, the queue. Already slow on recovering post the March,11 Japanese tsunami Toyota faces booking queues like never before. But Toyota has a solution.

Toyota India announces plans to double its production in India by 2013. With a planned investment of $220-million, the production is to rise to more than 300,000 units from current 160,000 units per annum.
